In legal proceedings and other dispute resolution contexts, expert witnesses are the only people permitted to have their opinions considered in the proceedings. An expert witness is retained by a party to the proceedings, but the expert is not an advocate for the party retaining their services. Rather, an expert witness must present relevant and impartial evidence in their respective area of expertise.

Where the pertinent facts are in favour of a party to a dispute, an expert report from an experienced expert witness is likely to facilitate a favourable settlement without the need for engaging in expensive court proceedings.
